Content
Our course aims to promote the acquisition of four essential skills: listening to, speaking, reading and writing the French language. It does this within a structure of five sections. The first covers general topic areas that will aid you in developing appropriate vocabulary as well as tackling the types of exercise you will face in the exams.

The second is designed to help with the listening element of the exam and is supported by a cassette. The third is a reference section and includes advice on such areas as using a dictionary, grammar and writing letters and essays in French. The fourth section covers two prescribed texts, although it is possible instead to answer questions on prepared topics chosen from a prescribed list. The final section contains suggested answers for all the exercises in the two recommended text books.

The French A Level is split into two major components - AS and A2. The AS level can be sat in its own right. Each lesson begins with a set of clearly stated objectives and an explanation of its place in the overall programme of study. Effective learning is encouraged through frequent activities and self-assessment questions. There are thirteen tutor-marked assignments (known as TMAs).

The Syllabus:
This course prepares candidates for the Edexcel French AS level syllabus 8190, for examination in 2005 and later years. Most candidates will then study the A2 syllabus 9190. The full Advanced Level qualification comprises AS and A2. This syllabus has been chosen because it is the most suitable for distance learning. Assessment is by six written papers of equal weighting. Both syllabuses have been chosen as they are the most suited to the distance learner.

You can find out more information on this syllabus on EDEXCEL’s website - http://www.edexcel.org.uk/
The French A Level covers the syllabus in six modules of the following titles:

  • Listening and writing
  • Reading and writing
  • Prepared oral topic
  • Oral discussion of issues; coursework
  • Prescribed texts (Molière: L'Avare & Mauriac: Thérèse Desqueyroux)
  • Listening and writing; reading and writing; writing in registers

It is possible to sit the full A Level in a one year period but it is recommended that you do it over two years. You can purchase the full A Level or we do offer the AS or A2 Level syllabus’s as individual courses.
